The armed forces, the war at home, and the history of Truax Field: The East Side History Club is collecting memories and preserving local history

The man is Clarence Legrey, the lead lathe operator and shop Foreman at Gisholt during World War II. His daughter, Charlotte Kalish, recently shared this image with members of Madison's East Side History Club (ESHC). Today, I saw it on the club's flyer announcing an upcoming meeting about East Side military memories and immediately emailed ESHC organizer Sarah White to request a copy to post here, along with an announcement of the ESHC's next meeting

From 2-4 p.m. on Saturday, May 17, 2008, the ESHC will will host a meeting at the Goodman Atwood MAIN Building at 2425 Atwood Avenue, focusing on remembering and honoring both the men and women from Madison's East Side who served in the armed forces and those who served the war effort on the home front. Retired Brigadier General Ralph Jensen will talk about the military history of Truax Field. Afterwards, there will be a "show and tell" by attendees, who are encouraged to bring photographs to share.

The East Side History Club "gathers memories through conversations with past and present East Side residents, and is in the process of publishing a collection of Wast Side stories, photographs, and recipes." If you'd like to learn more about the ESHC, check out my post from May 31, 2007, which also features some historic photos, including one of the building that is now home to Mickey's Tavern on Williamson Street and one of former UW-Madison Athletic Director Pat Richter and his family in the back yard of their East Side home circa 1954.

Note: You may also obtain additional information about the ESHC by telephoning organizers Sarah White (347-7329) and Pat Martin (241-0895). I remain squeamish about putting email addresses on the Internet, but will be glad to provide them for Sarah and Pat if you send me an email. Alternately, you may telephone the Goodman Atwood Community Center at (608) 241-1574.
